Computational Design as a means of artistic expression and inclusion

Design computacional como meio de expressão artística e inclusão

academic outreach, teaching

Immersive, interactive, and digital art

Description

The advance of new technologies has a strong influence on the realization of new artistic actions. Due to the growth of digital fabrication techniques and tools, the use of programmable computers and the increasing emergence of new software, this influence has been consolidating in the processes of parametric and generative design, in order to conceive unprecedented results besides exploring innovation in the processes of creation. Unfortunately these processes are still lacking in Brazil in areas that have potential for computational design application, a result of a lack of familiarity with programming logic. This project aims to carry out artistic investigations with the application of computational design. The study and experimentation of the possibilities of projects with the aid of programming aims to encourage the appreciation and search for knowledge of these techniques. The strengthening of this practice among the student community tends to present results such as the exploration of new creation processes, improvement in the structural administration of projects, and in the potential for innovation. One of the ongoing projects aims to translate sound frequencies into visual information for appreciation by people with hearing disabilities, in partnership with the UFC's Camerata (Prof. Dora and Prof. Liu). In 2022, besides prototypes and tests, several presentations were made in partnership with the Camerata, interactive installations at the Museu da Imagem e do Som (Image and Sound Museum) and with the Vice-Mayor of Fortaleza in events (Dragão Fashion, Bora Design and World Design Day). This way, it is expected to translate melodies into logical visual patterns and/or generate interactions with tracking. With this project, we intend to strengthen the research group in Computational Design of the Department of Architecture and Design by conducting artistic experiments using the new technologies of generative programming and digital fabrication. Besides the project applied to music, in 2018 we started a computer vision prototype to make the appreciation of tactile pieces more autonomous for blind people, since the computer, by capturing the camera, identifies the place of touch and plays descriptive audios. A first prototype has already been developed, with a demonstration video published on the group's webpage. In 2019 we finalized a version of this system that was tested with the group of blind people in activities at the Museum of Photography and used in an exhibition at the Museum of Photography in 2021 and 2022. For 2023, we plan to train more students in the techniques developed by the group and improve the systems already developed. Presentations in partnership with Camerata da UFC, similar to the ones in 2022, Museu de Arte da UFC, Museu da Imagem e do Som and partnerships with the Vice-Mayor of Fortaleza in its several events are planned.
